Context Menu with Submenus for Svelte

A right-click menu with Invite User, Share via Email and Share via Message submenus, and More Options.

UI library: Ark UI

The dashed area reads Right click here. Invite User comes first. Share via Email lists Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo Mail. Share via Message lists WhatsApp, Telegram, and Slack. More Options... is last.

Use submenus when one action has several targets and the top level should stay short. One nested level is usually enough. A Command menu scales better if the target list grows. In Svelte, Ark UI opens the submenu from its trigger.

FAQ

How are the submenus built?

ContextMenuSub wraps a ContextMenuSubTrigger, with its icon and label, and a ContextMenuSubContent with the nested items. Hovering the trigger or pressing the right arrow opens it, and the left arrow closes it.

How deep should submenus go?

One level, as here. Each extra level is another path for the pointer to lose; past that, open a dialog instead.

How are the icons added?

A Lucide icon as the first child of each item, hidden from assistive tech since the label names the action. The menu styles size and space it.

What opens the menu?

A right-click inside the dashed area, which reads Right click here on a mouse and Long press here on a touch screen. The area is ContextMenuTrigger; a long press on it opens the menu too. Wrap your own row, file or canvas in the trigger instead.

How do I run an action when an item is chosen?

Each item has a value; handle onSelect on ContextMenu, which receives { value }.

The menu closes after the action runs.

How do keyboard and touch users find these actions?

The arrow keys move through an open menu, Enter runs an item and Escape closes it. A right-click is easy to miss, so also offer the same actions from a visible button, such as a Dropdown Menu.
