Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
Flat icons can look sterile; a little texture gives a favicon character and a desktop icon a surface. At higher strength the same noise makes retro dither, distressed marks or static.
Mono grain at 10 to 20 percent: texture without color flecks, which look chaotic at 16 pixels. Judge it at the real tab size; grain that shows zoomed in may vanish there.
Color variation keeps each pixel near its own color, and palette noise uses only colors already in the icon; both roughen without recoloring.
Desktop icons are 48 to 256 pixels and take more: mono grain at 15 to 30 percent for visible texture, random pixels at 35 to 50 with grayscale for a Windows 95 look.
Intensity is the share of opaque pixels that get a new value, from 0 to 100 percent. On a 16-pixel favicon, 5 to 15 percent is texture and 30 percent is already a lot; a 256-pixel desktop icon takes more. Transparent pixels are never touched.
Random pixels writes any color. Mono grain writes a grey. Color variation nudges each channel a little, so the icon keeps its colors. Palette noise reuses colors sampled from the icon. Custom colors draws from the list you type, as hex or names.
ICO or PNG. ICO is written here, with PNG-wrapped frames: As is keeps the frame's size, 16–48 packs 16, 32 and 48 for a favicon, 16–256 adds 64, 128 and 256 for Windows. Every frame is the same grained picture, scaled.
An ICO is a container: a directory of frames, each a PNG or a Windows bitmap at its own size and depth. The tool reads the directory itself, lists every frame and starts on the largest; the Frame choice in the bar switches to another.
No. The ICO is read and its frames decoded by JavaScript on your device; the page makes no request with your file. Load it, go offline and it still works.
No. The ICO noise generator is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Up to 20 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
The default is an ICO at the frame's own size, or at 16 to 48 or 16 to 256 px; PNG is the other choice. Either way the edit is applied to the frame you pick.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
No. The result has the same width and height in pixels as the source.
