Next-gen image fade effects.
Drop an AVIF and fade it: a linear gradient in any direction, a radial vignette, a softened edge. The alpha is the effect; re-encode as AVIF and it stays small.

Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
A gradient alpha is many distinct values, which makes a PNG large. AVIF compresses smooth gradients well, so fades that were too heavy for the web become cheap.
Follow the layout: a hero fades downward into the content, a sidebar image fades sideways into the main column. The fade should go where the eye goes.
Blur the edges in your editor first, then apply a radial fade from the inside out here; the transparency finishes the softened edge.
An image that fades into the page feels less abrupt than one that pops in, so the load reads as smoother.
Make the faded version here and animate from it to the full image with CSS or JavaScript on scroll.
The fade touches the alpha only; the browser decodes HDR to standard range for the canvas, so the visible color is right and the HDR metadata isn't carried.
Solid multiplies every pixel's alpha by the opacity you set, so an image already at 80 percent set to 50 ends at 40. Linear fades from full to your value across the image in the direction you pick. Radial fades from the centre out, or the edges in, with a radius.
Yes. The new opacity multiplies the alpha the AVIF already has, so transparent areas stay transparent and soft edges stay soft.
A PNG with an 8-bit alpha channel, which every browser writes and every site and editor opens. Re-encode it as AVIF in your build for the web: gradient alpha compresses well there, often better than in PNG.
No. The file is decoded by your browser and every pixel is handled by JavaScript on your device. The page makes no request with your image, and you can load it, go offline and keep working.
No. The "Next-gen image fade effects" tool is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The "Next-gen image fade effects" tool holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
The edit is written as a PNG because PNG stores every pixel exactly, with a full alpha channel, so the result can be edited again without a second round of loss.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
No. The result has the same width and height in pixels as the source.
