Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
Drop the image (ICO, PNG or any format), pick the background color, tune the tolerance and download. The PNG works as a favicon in modern browsers; pack it as an ICO for the rest.
16 and 32 pixels for tabs and taskbars, 48 for Windows shortcuts, plus 180 for Apple touch icons and 192 for Android. Start from a large source and scale down.
Usually yes: a transparent favicon looks right on any tab color, light or dark. The exception is a logo whose background is part of the design.
A white box means a white background instead of alpha. Clear it here and the favicon reads on dark tabs too.
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico"> for an ICO, or <link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/favicon.png"> for the PNG, in the head.
Start from a source of at least 256 pixels, clear the background, and make the small sizes from it. A small source enlarged will blur.
Drop the ICO, then pick the color to remove: click it in the preview or type its hex. Tolerance widens the match to nearby shades; 0 takes the exact color only and 10 to 20 catches anti-aliasing and off-whites. The result is a PNG with real alpha.
Turn on outer pixels only. Then only matching pixels connected to the edges go, so a white letter or highlight inside the icon stays. Preview mask shows exactly which pixels will be cleared before you download.
The largest frame of the ICO. A browser's canvas writes PNG, which every editor opens; to get an ICO back, pack the PNG with the PNG to ICO tool at the sizes you need.

Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
The edit is written as a PNG because PNG stores every pixel exactly, with a full alpha channel, so the result can be edited again without a second round of loss.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
No. The result has the same width and height in pixels as the source.
