Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
It holds the place of a picture that isn't ready yet: in a wireframe, a prototype, a layout being built or a test of an image pipeline. Its size written on it says what the final picture must be. It keeps the layout at its true shape, so nothing jumps when the real image arrives.
A data URI puts the image inside the HTML or CSS itself, so there's no file to host and no request to wait for. The SVG version here is under a kilobyte at any size. It suits mockups, tests and email templates; for a live site, a file the browser can cache is better.
SVG is tiny, sharp at any zoom and easy to edit, and suits code and prototypes. PNG, JPG or WebP are for places that want a bitmap: design tools, CMS fields and tests of image uploads.
Cross draws the two diagonals, the old wireframe sign for a picture that goes here. Grid and Stripes add texture so the box reads as a placeholder at a glance, and Plain is a flat fill. On a pattern the label sits on a plate of the fill color, so it stays readable.
No. The image is drawn by your browser from an SVG it builds on the page, and the files and the ZIP are made on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Up to 8,000 pixels a side. The SVG stays under a kilobyte at any size, while a PNG at the largest sizes takes a moment to draw.
One set: Social (Open Graph, X, square, portrait, story and banners), Web (Full HD down to thumbnails), Ads (IAB sizes such as 300 × 250 and 728 × 90) or Avatars and icons, or every size at once. Each file is named for its size, like placeholder-1200x630.png, and shows its own size unless you typed words.
No. The Placeholder image generator is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The Placeholder image generator holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.

The tool is free. Its interface is built from shadcn.io's own components (Button, Input, Slider and the rest of the registry under /ui), which come in React, Vue, Svelte and Solid. Pro adds the blocks and templates for the product around it.
