Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
AVIF is the newest and most efficient web image format, and not everything opens it yet: older design tools, email clients, Office, many CMS uploaders and some CDNs. PNG opens everywhere and keeps every pixel and the alpha channel, so it is the safe copy to edit, send or archive.
Converting adds no loss: PNG stores exactly the pixels the browser decoded. The compression artifacts of the original AVIF encoding, if it was lossy, are already in those pixels and stay, but nothing new is lost.
AVIF compresses roughly half as small as PNG on average, often much better on photos. The PNG is the same picture stored without that compression, so it is bigger: that is the price of a format every program opens. Keep the AVIF for the web.
Yes. Both formats carry an alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds, soft edges and gradient fades come through unchanged. The checkerboard in the preview shows where the result is transparent.
AVIF can hold 10- and 12-bit HDR color; the browser decodes it to 8-bit sRGB for the canvas, and that is what the PNG gets. The picture looks right on a normal display, but the extra range isn't kept.
Drop the file onto the pane or choose it. The browser decodes it, the PNG is written at once, and the download button hands it to you with the same name and a .png extension.
A still frame: the first frame of an animated AVIF becomes the PNG. For an animation you need a tool that reads every frame.
Every current browser decodes AVIF: Chrome and Edge since 2020, Firefox since version 93 and Safari since 16.4 (2023). If a file won't open here, it is probably an animated or very large AVIF on an older browser; try a current one.
No. The file is decoded by your browser and every pixel is handled by JavaScript on your device. The page makes no request with your image, and you can load it, go offline and keep working.
No. The AVIF to PNG converter is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The AVIF to PNG converter holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
The conversion step is: PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly and keeps transparency. It cannot bring back detail a lossy source already lost, and the file is often larger than the original.
No. The result has the same width and height in pixels as the source.
