Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
WebP has had broad support for years: every browser since 2020, WordPress and most CMSs, and nearly every image CDN. AVIF is more efficient but younger, and Safari before 16.4 can't show it. WebP is the middle ground: modern compression that works nearly everywhere.
Usually 20 to 30 percent larger than the AVIF at the same look, and still far smaller than PNG or JPG. The after pane shows the size as you move the quality slider.
Yes. WebP carries an alpha channel; leave Transparency on Keep and the background stays transparent. Choose Fill and pick a color when the image goes on a known background and you want a slightly smaller file.
A still frame only. The first frame of an animated AVIF becomes the WebP.
Drop the AVIF, set the quality, choose whether to keep the alpha, and download. 80 to 90 looks like the original for photos; graphics with flat colors can go lower.
Every current browser decodes AVIF: Chrome and Edge since 2020, Firefox since version 93 and Safari since 16.4 (2023). If a file won't open here, it is probably an animated or very large AVIF on an older browser; try a current one.
No. The file is decoded by your browser and every pixel is handled by JavaScript on your device. The page makes no request with your image, and you can load it, go offline and keep working.
No. The AVIF to WebP converter is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
It draws the image on a canvas and asks your browser to encode WebP. If your browser can't, the tool says 'This browser can't write WebP.' instead of saving a wrong file.
No. The result has the same width and height in pixels as the source.
