PNG is lossless and keeps transparency: screenshots, graphics, logos. JPEG is small for photos and has no transparency. WebP is smaller than both and keeps transparency, and every current browser shows it. AVIF is smaller still, at the cost of slower encoding and patchier support in older software.

The browser decodes the file to pixels and the canvas encodes them again in the format you pick. For the lossy formats the quality slider sets how much detail the encoder keeps; PNG has no quality setting because it keeps every pixel.

Only where the browser can write it: Chrome and Edge encode AVIF, Safari and Firefox don't yet, so the option is shown only when it works. Reading AVIF works in all of them.

Anything the browser can decode: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF (the first frame), AVIF, BMP, ICO and SVG, which is rasterized at its natural size. HEIC from an iPhone isn't decoded by most browsers; export it as JPEG from Photos first.

No. The file is decoded and re-encoded in your browser and the page makes no request with it. Load the page, go offline, and it still converts.

Converting to JPEG drops the alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white. PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it. The checkerboard behind the previews is the page showing transparency, not part of the file.

Your file's name with the new extension: photo.png becomes photo.webp. In a ZIP, two files that would share a name get a number, photo (2).webp.
