Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
EAN-13 and EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar and ITF: the one-dimensional formats on retail packaging, shipping labels, library books and tickets. For QR codes, use the QR scanner.
It asks the browser's own BarcodeDetector, the same engine Chrome and Safari use for camera features. Chrome, Edge and Opera have it on every platform; Safari has it since version 17 on macOS and iOS. Firefox doesn't yet, and the page says so rather than loading a scanning library.
Every code found in the image or the frame is listed with its format and its value, and a note on what the value is: a number, a link, text. Copy any of them with its button.
Most retail codes are plain numbers: EAN-13 and UPC-A are the product's GTIN, which a product database turns into a name. The tool gives you the number; it doesn't look it up.
No. The image or the camera frame is read on your device by the browser's detector, and the page makes no request. Nothing is stored either.
Press Start camera and allow it; the preview shows the back camera on a phone. Hold the code flat and in focus, filling a good part of the frame, and press Scan. Stop camera releases it.
Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP onto the pane or choose it with the button. Screenshots work; a photo should be sharp, well lit and not at a steep angle.
Blur, glare, a tiny code or a cropped quiet zone are the usual causes. Move closer, hold still, and make sure the white space on both sides of the bars is in the picture.
No. The Barcode scanner is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The Barcode scanner holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
No. The camera preview runs continuously, but a frame is read only when you press Scan, so each press reads what is in view at that moment.
It asks for the rear camera, which is the one a phone points at a code. A device with one camera, such as a laptop, uses that.
Yes. The camera stream is stopped when you press Stop camera and when you leave the page, so the browser's camera indicator goes off.
Closest to the Barcode scanner: Barcode generator, QR code scanner, QR code generator, Mic and camera test. Each opens on its own page, free and in the browser.
The Barcode scanner is one of 7 in its group. The group's page, /tools/data, lists them all.
The tool is free. Its interface is built from shadcn.io's own components (Button, Input, Slider and the rest of the registry under /ui), which come in React, Vue, Svelte and Solid. Pro adds the blocks and templates for the product around it.
