Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
A GIF holds at most 256 colors and a photograph has millions, so smooth gradients turn into visible bands. That is the format, not the tool. Dithering hides the banding behind a fine pattern; for a photo that must stay a photo, JPG or WebP is the right format.
Dithering scatters the available colors in patterns that read, from a distance, as the colors in between. Gradients get smoother and the image gets a fine speckle. Try it both ways; it usually helps photographs and hurts flat graphics.
Rarely, and on purpose: a deliberately retro or posterized look, compatibility with something old that reads nothing else, a tiny thumbnail where detail does not matter. Animated GIFs are a different thing; this tool writes a still frame.
Keep the color count high, 200 to 256, and leave dithering on. Portraits and product shots on plain backgrounds convert far better than busy landscapes, and a smaller image hides the palette better than a large one.
Drop the JPG, then set the color count and dithering. The browser picks a palette by median cut, maps every pixel to it, and writes the GIF, all on the spot, so the result updates as you move the slider.
Fewer colors mean a smaller file and a coarser image. Two colors is a hard black-and-white poster; 16 is a comic; 64 is a readable photo; 256 is as good as a GIF gets. The palette size and whether it was dithered show under the result.
No. The file is decoded, drawn and re-encoded by your browser's canvas, and the page makes no request with it. You can load the page, go offline and keep working; nothing is stored either.
No. The JPG to GIF converter is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The JPG to GIF converter holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
No. It writes one still frame: a GIF with a palette of up to 256 colors, optionally dithered. Animation in the source is not kept.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
