Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
Yes, with care. At 16 by 16 pixels a busy photo is a smudge, while a close face, a single object on a plain ground or a high-contrast shape still reads. Preview the smallest size before you ship it; the ICO shows at its largest frame here.
A favicon wants 16, 32 and 48 pixels: the browser tab, bookmarks and the Windows taskbar. Desktop shortcuts use 64; app icons and high-density screens use 128 and 256. One ICO can hold them all, and each reader picks the frame it needs.
Both are square. Crop takes the middle of the photo at full width or height, which suits most pictures; Fit shrinks the whole photo into the square and fills the bars left over with a color you choose, since a JPG has no transparency to leave there.
The frames are stored as PNG inside the ICO, the form every browser and Windows since Vista read. The container is the classic one: a six-byte header, a sixteen-byte entry per frame, then the PNGs.
Drop the JPG, pick a size set and a frame, and a fill color if you chose Fit. Each size is drawn on a canvas and written as a PNG, and the frames are packed into one ICO in your browser. Download it and name it favicon.ico, or whatever the app expects.
Add a link tag in the head: rel="icon" with the ICO's path. Modern browsers also take a PNG or an SVG with the same tag, so a 32 pixel PNG beside the ICO covers everything, and a 180 pixel PNG serves as the apple-touch-icon.
No. The file is decoded, drawn and re-encoded by your browser's canvas, and the page makes no request with it. You can load the page, go offline and keep working; nothing is stored either.
No. The JPG to ICO converter is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The JPG to ICO converter holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
Four sets: 16, 32 and 48 px; 16 to 64; 16 to 256; or 128 and 256 px. A photo that isn't square is cropped to its middle, or fitted over a fill color.
No. The browser decodes the image and the tool writes a new file from its pixels, so camera EXIF, GPS position and text chunks in the original are not copied into the result. Keep the original file if you need them.
