Make a JPG smaller.

Drop the JPG, leave the defaults, quality 80 and a 1 MB cap, and download. For most photos that is a much smaller file that looks the same.

Pick a cap from the size menu: 100 KB, 250 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB or 5 MB. The tool lowers the quality until the file fits under it; for the smallest caps, also lower the longest side.

Not visibly at the default. Lower qualities trade more size for artifacts you can see in the preview, so you decide where to stop.

Instagram recompresses whatever you give it, so a 1 to 2 MB file at quality 80 is a good source: sharp, and not needlessly heavy to upload.
