Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
A PNG is a signature followed by chunks, each with a type, a length and a checksum. IHDR holds the dimensions, bit depth, color type and interlacing; IDAT the pixels; IEND the end. The optional ones carry everything else: text, DPI, time, color.
All three store keyword and text pairs such as Author, Software, Comment or Creation Time. tEXt is plain Latin-1, zTXt the same text zlib-compressed, and iTXt UTF-8 with an optional language tag and translated keyword. The tool inflates zTXt in the browser.
pHYs gives pixels per metre; the tool converts that to DPI (72 and 300 are the usual values). tIME is the last modification time in UTC. gAMA, sRGB and cHRM describe how the colors should be read, and iCCP embeds a named ICC profile, whose name and size are shown.
PNG has no EXIF of its own. A camera or editor may add an eXIf chunk, which the tool lists by size, or write the same facts into text chunks, which it shows in full.
Only PNG. The tool reads the bytes directly rather than decoding the picture, so a JPG or WebP is refused with a plain message. For dimensions of any format use the dimensions finder.
Click Copy JSON. Everything shown, from the header fields to the chunk list, goes to the clipboard as one JSON object, ready for a catalog or a bug report.
No. The file is read in your browser and every step runs there, on your device. The page makes no request with your image, so you can load it, go offline and keep working.
No. The PNG metadata viewer is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The PNG metadata viewer holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
Up to 100 MB per file, the limit the tool states under its drop area. A larger file is refused with a plain message instead of being decoded.
No, it takes one file at a time. If you drop or choose several, only the first is used; run the tool again for the next one.
No. It only reads the file and shows facts about it; your original is untouched, and nothing is written unless you download a result.
The metadata as JSON, to copy or download.
Closest to the PNG metadata viewer: PNG viewer, PNG dimensions finder, PNG compressor, PNG transparency creator. Each opens on its own page, free and in the browser.
The PNG metadata viewer is one of 47 in its group. The group's page, /tools/png, lists them all.
The tool is free. Its interface is built from shadcn.io's own components (Button, Input, Slider and the rest of the registry under /ui), which come in React, Vue, Svelte and Solid. Pro adds the blocks and templates for the product around it.
