Text counter.

A word is a run of letters or digits, with apostrophes and hyphens allowed inside it, so 'don't' and 'well-known' each count once. Punctuation, symbols and emoji on their own don't count. This matches what word processors report in nearly every case; the numbers can differ by one or two on texts full of symbols.

Characters count every character including spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the number platforms like Twitter and SMS care about. Characters without spaces drop whitespace, a figure some translation and typesetting rates use. Both count Unicode code points, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once.

Reading time divides the word count by 225 words per minute, the average adult reading pace for prose. Speaking time uses 155 words per minute, a comfortable presenting pace. Both are rounded to a tenth of a minute, and real times vary with the material and the reader.

A sentence ends at a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space or the end of the text; a final sentence with no mark still counts. A paragraph is any text between blank lines, and lines are counted at every line break.
