Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
Yes. X reads the same twitter: meta tags. Since late 2023 its large card shows the image with the page's title laid over it and the domain under it, without the description; the summary card keeps a square thumbnail beside the text.
No. When they're missing, X uses og:title, og:description and og:image, so a page with Open Graph tags needs only twitter:card, plus twitter:site and twitter:creator for the handles. The generator writes them that way, and Next.js copies them from openGraph.
A 2:1 image of at least 300 × 157 px and at most 4096 × 4096, under 5 MB, as JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF (only a GIF's first frame shows). The Open Graph size, 1200 × 630, works for both: X crops it to 2:1 from the center.
X's Card Validator stopped drawing previews in 2022; the way to check now is to paste the link into a draft post, which renders the card without publishing it. Before the page is live, the preview here shows what the tags will make.
The X accounts of the site and of the author. X attributes the card to them; the generator takes a handle with or without the @, or a profile URL, and writes @name.
Slack and Discord read twitter:card too: with summary_large_image they draw the image across the message, with summary a thumbnail beside the text. The twitter:label and twitter:data pairs show as fields in Slack's unfurl.
No. The tags are written in your browser, and a dropped image is shown from your own device; only its size, weight and type are read.
No. The Twitter card generator is free and opens without a sign-in, an account or an install.
Nothing. The Twitter card generator holds your input in the page's memory, so closing or reloading the tab clears it, and it saves nothing in this browser.
summary_large_image and summary, the two X shows for links. The player and app cards need X's approval or an app listing and aren't covered.
As X does since late 2023: the image cropped to 2:1 with the title in a label over its lower left corner and From and the domain under it. With summary, a square thumbnail sits beside the domain, title and description.
Yes: at least 300 × 157 px for the large card, at most 4096 px a side, under 5 MB, and no SVG. A wide image on the summary card is noted, since X crops it to a square from the center.
