Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
It depends on the country. In the US, 15 to 20% of the bill before tax is usual at a sit-down restaurant, 18 to 20% being common today. Where service is included in the price, as in much of Europe and Asia, a tip is a small extra or rounding up.
US etiquette guides say before tax, since the tax isn't part of the service. Type the tax shown on the receipt and turn on Tip on the amount before tax: the tip is then worked out on the bill less the tax.
In cents: the total is divided by the number of people and the odd cents go to the first shares, so the shares add up exactly. 100.00 split three ways is 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33, and the status line says who pays the extra cent.
Total rounds the total up to the next whole unit and puts the difference on the tip. Each share rounds every share up, so the total is that share times the number of people. The tip as a percent shows what the rounding did to it.
Type the bill, pick 15, 18, 20 or 25% or type any rate, and set the number of people. Each person's share, the tip and the total update as you type, with the same bill at seven usual rates in the table underneath.

From 1 to 100. The shares are in cents and add up to the total, the odd cents going to the first shares.
Total rounds the total up to the next whole unit and adds the difference to the tip. Each share rounds every share up, so the total becomes that share times the number of people.
10%, 12%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 25%: the tip, the total and each share at each, with your rate marked when it is one of them.
