Compress PDF.
Shrink PDFs two ways: losslessly, with every page left as it is, or by redrawing pages as JPEGs at the resolution and quality you choose. A file that wouldn't get smaller is kept as it was.

Questions and answers
Before you trust the result: what to know about the format, the limits, your data and the tools next to it.
It rewrites the file's structure and leaves the pages alone. Fonts and images stored more than once are kept once, objects nothing uses are dropped, uncompressed streams are Deflate-compressed, and small objects are packed into compressed object streams. Text, images and metadata don't change.
Every page is drawn as an image at the DPI you pick (72, 100, 150 or 300) and saved as a JPEG at your quality, in color or grayscale. Scans and image-heavy files shrink most. The cost: text becomes pixels that can't be selected or searched, and links and form fields are gone.
A file that's already compact, such as a text document saved by a word processor, has little to remove losslessly. When the result isn't smaller, the tool keeps the original and says so. For scans and photos, try Rasterize at 150 or 100 dpi.
150 dpi at 70% quality, the default, reads well on screen and on a home printer. 100 or 72 dpi suits files only read on screens, and 300 dpi keeps fine print sharp but saves less. Grayscale helps black-and-white documents scanned in color.
