150 dpi suits screens, slides and email: an A4 page comes out 1240 × 1754 pixels. 300 dpi suits print, and 600 dpi keeps fine print and line art sharp at the cost of large files. Each page card shows its pixel size before you convert.
JPG is the smallest for pages with photos and the format most forms and sites accept. PNG is lossless, so text and diagrams stay crisp at a larger size. WebP is offered when your browser can save it and is usually smaller than JPG at the same look.
With pdf.js, the PDF renderer inside Firefox, on a canvas in your browser. Pages are drawn on white, as they print, and each image keeps its page's proportions at the chosen resolution.
Browsers refuse canvases past a point, so a page that would pass about 14,000 pixels on a side or 120 megapixels is drawn at the most that fits. Only very large pages, such as posters at 600 dpi, reach that.
